Born 1980 in Oxford, James started his drumming journey aged 11, with his very first drum lesson at school. His parents, hired Gino Washingtons drummer to continue his teaching.
At age 14, James had the opportunity to tour with his parents band. After gaining valuable experience with other bands, James joined Alibi, who were featured in several music magazines and were eventually signed.
After Alibi disbanded, James continued to further develop his skills with a variety of bands until 2008, when there was an opportunity for him to join BonGiovi.
